Mexico’s FM to Meet Global Sumud Flotilla Families

Following a directive from President Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs is taking decisive action to support Mexican activists detained or affected by the recent interception of the Sumud Global Fleet.

Six Mexican nationals on board the Global Sumud Flotilla that was intercepted on April 29th and unlawfully detained by Israeli military forces on international waters are in contact with Mexican diplomatic representations in the region and they are in good conditions, the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs (SRE) informed in a press release.

Mexico has reiterated constantly throughout this process its demands to Israel to guarantee the physical and mental integrity of the Mexican nationals,  respect their human rights and fully observe international law and allow access to consular aid when its required.

Despite this, the families of the six Mexican activists considers that their physical safety remains at risk and that there has been no significant progress towards their release, for this reason they will meet with Roberto Velasco, Secretary of Foreign Affairs in the coming days. 

In regards to one of the Mexican national that was on board in a different boat and was intercepted in international waters and unlawful arrested by Israel military forces and then released and repatriated to Mexico, arriving in Mexico City on May 2nd, the Secretariat of Foreign Affair presented through diplomatic channels a forceful protest to Israel.

The Secretariat of Foreign Affairs emphasized that once they had knowledge that there would be presence of Mexican nationals on board of the Global Sumud Flotilla, the diplomatic representation of Mexico in the region initiated an ongoing support and accompanying procedures and carried out efforts with authorities in the region to protect their integrity and rights, providing them with security information, emergency contacts and maintaining constant communication throughout the journey.

The Secretariat of Foreign Affairs reinsure that they will continue to provide follow-up and appropriate support, through available legal and diplomatic channels to protect the well-being of the Mexican activists.
