U.S. and Mexico Top Diplomats Meet in D.C. to Discuss Progress on Security and Border Cooperation

Velasco and Rubio praised security progress while addressing priority issues of the bilateral agenda, such as the respect for human rights of Mexican migrants in the U.S.
Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Roberto Velasco, met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington, D.C.
During the meeting, both secretaries highlighted significant progress in security—described as the “most important in the region”—particularly in the fight against drug trafficking, arms smuggling, and transnational organized crime, as noted in a press release from the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs.
Secretary Velasco reiterated the importance of continuing to work based on the principles of respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, shared responsibility, mutual trust, and collaboration without subordination.
In addition, they addressed the progress made regarding irregular migration and continued talks on protecting the human rights of Mexican migrants in the U.S.
On his X account, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio highlighted his meeting with his Mexican counterpart, noting that they discussed “decisive actions” to combat illegal immigration, halt fentanyl trafficking, and dismantle drug cartels.
