Controversy Deepens in Spain Over Madrid’s President Ayuso’s Failed Mexico Tour
The opposition, political commentators, and the media demand full transparency and explanation regarding trip’s expenses and funding sources.
Following the failure of what was billed as an "institutional" tour of Mexico, the President of the Autonomous Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, from the far-right party Partido Popular (PP), abruptly cut it short just 5 days into a 10 day-trip.
According to Ayuso, the cancellation was triggered by a “boycott”, from Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. Furthermore, she lashed out at Spanish President Pedro Sánchez, accusing him of abandonment and leaving her to her own devices claiming that her life was in “danger”, an argument she used to justify why she did not fly immediately back to Madrid following the announcement. There are reports that suggest that she stayed on vacation in Riviera Maya.
Following the outrage that Ayuso sparked both in Mexico and Spain after defending the Spanish conquest, praising conqueror Hernán Cortés, romanticizing miscegenation and lashing out against President Claudia Sheinbaum and her government, pressure has mounted from the media and opposition parties—such as the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party and the Más Madrid party—for the Madrid President to clarify the trip's purpose and its funding sources.
While Ayuso claims that all of her trips and expenses are published on Madrid’s transparency website, an investigation by the Spanish TV channel La Sexta revealed a significant lack of information. According to the network, the website- last updated March 31, 2026- completely omitted a trip she made to New York City 20 days prior. Furthermore, although the website reports 16 international trips since 2023, it only provides airfare, lodging and meal expenses for five of them, many of which contain incomplete fields. For instance her most recent documented trip to Texas last year, only displays expenses for the airport VIP Protocol Lounge, leaving all other fields blank, despite it being a six-day stay -a pattern repeated in her travels to Germany, Santiago de Chile and Romania.
Regarding the cost of her recent trip to Mexico, Ayuso and her government have failed to provide a clear accounting. Amidst several contradictory statements, concerns of potential illegality arose when Ayuso declared that her expenses were covered by the government of the Mexican state of Aguascalientes, the organizers of the film award “Los Premios Platino” and sponsors of the events she was invited to.
Ayuso's administration has been plagued by several controversy and corruption scandals. One of the most notorious and controversial is the tax fraud case involving her sentimental partner, Alberto González Amador. He is currently under trial for allegedly committing two counts of tax fraud and one count of document forgery. The case involves funds derived from millions of euros in commissions obtained as an intermediary in the sale of masks and medical supplies in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.
