Mexico’s first Sate-back EV Olinia unveiled
Production is set to begin in 2027 announced Roberto Capuano, director of the Olinia project. As a flagship electromobility initiative of President Claudia Sheinbaum’s government, represents a mejor step toward sustainable transport in Mexico.
At President Claudia Sheinbaum’s press conference a first glimpse of the prototype of Olinia was shared and a formal presentation detailing full specifications of the vehicle is scheduled on June 7th.
Olinia, which in Náhuatl means movement, is compact electric vehicle design specifically for the “real needs of the Mexican cities, towns, and of the Mexican population”, Roberto Capuano explained
“It’s a low cost vehicle and accesible, 100% electric vehicle that can be charged using standard household or business outlet. It’s specious and comfortable, and for safety and the uses which is intended, its maximum speed is 50 km per-hour”, Capuano highlighted.
Olinia is entirely designed, develop and manufacture by Mexican engineers, academies and electromobility specialists. The project is collaborative with public institutions like the National Technological Institute of Mexico, the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), research centers under the Secretariat of Science, Technology and Innovation (SECIHTI), and prominent public universities including the UNAM, UPAEP and BUAP.
President Claudia Sheinbaum highlighted that behind the development of Olinia is the work of more than 80 Mexicans scholars and technicians, “who worked intensely, many of them from different parts of the country”.
Initially, 20.000 units will be produced, and will be scaled up to 50,000 in four years, Capuano pointed out.
Beyond the vehicle itself, Olinia encompasses the establishment of Mexico’s first assembly plant dedicated for mini-EV production.
