Mexico’s Security Strategy continues to yield hard hitting results

April hits an all time low in homicides rates over a decade and a 52% accumulative reduction of high-impact crime compared to 2018.

The security cabinet presented the bi-weekly report on the advance of the National Security Strategy during President Sheinbaum’s daily morning presser.

Omar García Harfuch, Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, reported the results of the national security strategy as for April 2026, of which highlighted that 28,000 arms were seized; over 391 tons of drugs and 5.4 million fentanyl pills were confiscates; 2,337 clandestine drug labs were dismantled in 22 states and 1,310 individuals were detained under the National Strategy Against Extortion. 

From October 1st 2024 to the 30th of April 2026, federal forces detained 52,628 individuals linked to high impact crime. Between mid April and early May 2,458 individuals were detained, including leaders of criminals cells and priority objectives.

On the other hand, Marcela Figueroa, head of the Executive Secretariat of National Public Security System reported that national crime incidence with consolidate figures as for April 30th 2026, that includes information of the 32 state prosecutor’s office, shows that 19 months into the administration of President Claudia Sheinbaum, there has been a 40% reduction in the daily average of intentional homicides, which represents  34 fewer homicides per-day, dropping from 86.9 to 52.5, meaning 1,020 fewer homicides in April.

Figueroa highlighted that April 2026 marks as the lowest homicide rate in the last 11 years and that the first quarter of the year also record as the lowest level in the period with 51.2 homicides per-day, while the average of high-impact crimes, a 52% accumulative reduction is maintained, compared to 2018.
