The dismantling of a major Latin American trafficking network in St. Petersburg underscores the deep infiltration of cartels into Ecuador's commercial trade.

The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) officers dismantled a drug trafficking network from Latin America, seizing 500 kilos of cocaine hidden inside maritime containers arriving from Ecuador containing pieces of frozen, ungutted tuna. The seizure took place in one of the terminals of the Big Port of St. Petersburg, reported the FSB press office.

The security services agency detailed that the operation was carried out in several stages, with the aim of dismantling a cocaine smuggling network from Latin America to Russia for its subsequent illegal sale. In its first stage, they obtained information on an unemployed Russian citizen identified as one of the organizers of an international drug trafficking group, involved in establishing drug supply channels to Russia. The FSB then obtained advance information about a planned cocaine shipment from Ecuador to Russia in June of the current year through shipping containers. In the last phase of the operation, the suspect’s criminal record was documented.

FSB officers also seized digital storage devices containing cryptocurrency wallets with an estimated value of $613,000 USD. In addition, 13 luxury wristwatches with a total value exceeding 1.3 million USD, and five high-end vehicles valued more than 1.6 million USD were found at the suspect’s residence.

The suspect has been charged with ‘attempted distribution of narcotics on an especially large scale’ and is being held in pretrial detention by a court order, reported Russian news agency TASS.

This is not the first time that cocaine has been smuggled inside maritime containers coming out of Ecuadorian ports. There have been reports in European ports of authorities finding cocaine in several banana shipments. According to independent media reports, the family banana company of Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa has been linked to drug trafficking.
